PSR Tutorial Report - July - September 2014
The summer sure has seemed to fly by and it's time for another (quarterly) report. If you've been on vacation and not much at the keyboard, you will find we have added plenty of new songs as well as two new performers, new styles from Onacimus, Jan, and Henni, and new registration files from Jim Laing and Peter (Xenix). Michael Bedesem has updated two of his utilities and released the 2014 version of his Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), which is a treasure-trove of valuable information for Yamaha owners. I've managed to keep things going and to pull together to massive new Song Collections with thousands of the MP3s that have appeared on the PSR Tutorial over the years. Details provided below.
Onacimus Styles - In late July, Onacimus started a PSR S910 Internet Collection with 76 styles. He added to that collection in August and September with new styles and updates bringing the current total to 202 styles. These are in SFF2 format and will also play on the PSR-S950/S750 as well as the Tyros3/4/5 models.
In May, Onacimus gave us his "SuperMegaPlus" Collection (276 styles) for the PSR-S910, which includes new and different styles from the TYROS4, PSR-S950 and PSR-S650. In August, this collection was expanded with 8 of the PSR-SS950 Audio styles converted to work with the S910. As you might expect, converting the Audio styles is very difficult and takes quite some time. Hopefully, we see more conversions in the coming quarter.
Jan's Styles - Last year we were privileged to add a new styles page for Jan's original Dance styles and a number of conversions. Many members, looking for some more modern beats have enjoyed Jan's creations. In August, Jan generously provided us with 14 new Dance styles.
Henni's Styles - In July, Henni converted 500 styles from the Tyros5 for use by PSR-S950 owners. Henni earlier had a PSR-3000 and there are tens of thousands of styles on Henni's Collections page for that keyboard PSR-3000. All of these, of course, will also play on later keyboards.
Jim Laing - In August, Jim Laing expanded his registration offerings with a set of "MISC" and a set of "XTRA" registration banks for the Tyros5 and Tyros3 with about 100 new songs. Other registration sets on Jim's page include Irish Registrations, Retirement Home Registrations, Band Registrations, and Italian Registrations.
Peter (Xenix) - This past quarter to Peter (Xeenix) has generously compiled a series of registrations for a number of Busker's fake books. In July,, Peter gave us registrations for the 101 songs in Buskers 101 Hits (Book1, Book2, Book6, Book7), and the Busker Play It Again book with 55 songs. In August, Peter added an alphabetical list of his registrations for 12 Yamaha keyboards. You'll find all of these registrations on a new page in the Styles | Gig Disks section for Peter's registrations.
In August, Michael Bedesem releases Ver 1.8.2 of Padmaker-Midi, a tool for creating a Multipad based upon the patterns from one or more midi or pad files. Michael also released version 4.97 of MixMaster, MixMaster is a program for editing midi files. It is unique because it is designed specifically for the song, style, pad and voice files used by the Tyros/PSR line of instruments.
In July, Michael Bedesem released V1.0.4 of FolderCheck. FolderCheck is a utility that scans folders on the computer and displays the number of files in each folder. Folders with more than 200 files are highlighted in red. These may have to be divided into smaller subfolders so they can be recognized on your Yamaha keyboard.
2014 FAQs Released - Michael Bedesem releases the 2014 update to his popular PSR/Tyros/CVP FAQs. This latest version of his FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) is a massive 149-page pdf document. You can download the entire file, or view it online jumping directly to the areas that may be of interest to you. No matter what model of Yamaha Arranger you have, this FAQ file will provide you with the answers to many, if not all, of your questions.

New Song Collections
In September, I announced two new, very large, MP3 song collections. These are each provided on an 8 GB USB drive, which is included in the price as is the shipping and handling. In both collections, songs are organized alphabetically by song title. (These collections are too large to be available as download options.) These new collections replace the earlier Songs-2009, Songs-2010, Songs-2011, Songs-2012 and Songs-2013 collections.
Song Collection No. 1 ($36) includes all of the MP3 files that were posted on the PSR Tutorial from 2002 through April of 2011. It has over 2,056 MP3s, 112 hours of music. There are songs from 58 PSR Performer artists as well as 36 contributing artists. 18 different keyboards are represented in this collection.
Song Collection No.2 ($36) includes 1,806 MP3 files drawn from songs added to the PSR Tutorial web site over a period of about 2 and a half years from May, 2011 through October, 2013. There are 104 hours of music from 60 PSR Performers and 11 contributing artists. 17 different keyboards are represented.
You can save some money by ordering both Songs No.1 and Songs No. 2 merged together and delivered on a 16 GB USB drive ($64). The alphabetical collection now expands to 3,862 files, 217 hours of music from 125 performers and contributors, playing on 23 different keyboards.
The amount of space available on the server to maintain MP3s online is limited. Performers can add new songs any time, but there is a upper limit of 60 songs per performer. This limit is not enforced every month, but in August, I did scale back the songs from some performer pages eliminating 150 songs and freeing up 760 MB of disk space. Of course, these songs, and all the earlier songs no longer online, can be found in the two "Song Collections" now available.
As of the end of this quarter, there are 2,376 MP3s available online. 1,826 are found in the PSR Performer pages, 355 in the Archived Performer pages, and 195 in the Christmas Songs section.
I am now working on updating the discontinued Styles Collection #4, which had all of the Yamaha preset styles for arranger keyboards through 2011. That collection is still available in the 2012 Styles Library, but an updated version of this collection, including styles from the more recent keyboards. I expect to also include conversions of some of the newer Yamaha styles so they can be used on earlier keyboards. This new collection should be available some time in October.
These new resource collections are critical to keeping the PSR Tutorial up and running. The annual bill for the server and associated services, over $2,400 last year, will come due sometime in November. So, if you have never order one of our resource collections, I encourage you to to so. Instructions on how to order are provided below.
