As you consider different models of PSR keyboards, you'll find that not only do the available panel voices differ, but there is also a difference in the number, and kind, of preset styles offered. Generally, as one opts for a more expensive keyboard, you will receive more preset styles in the keyboard. In many cases, the style "name" is the same from keyboard to keyboard, but that may not mean that it is the same style. It also may not sound the same since different keyboards have different voices and speaker capacity. Nonetheless, comparing the style names can give you some idea of the differences among the various PSR options.

Since there are so many styles, it is convenient to "group" the styles into a smaller number of style categories. The PSR-2000 and the PSR-2100 have seven style categories. The Tyros, the top of the line model, has 10 style categories. As a keyboard contains more styles, broader categories can be defined into more defined components. For example, the Tyros has style categories for POP&ROCK, COUNTRY, and R&B whereas these styles are all combined into the PSR-2100 POP&ROCK category. Table 1 below shows the number of styles in various PSR models by style category. You can easily see how the total number of styles increase as you move up the product line.

Just looking at the totals, one gets the impression that going from the 2100 to the 3000 gives you 37 additional styles and moving to the Tyros provides yet another additional 60 styles. But it isn't quite that simple. The PSR-3000 actually has quite a few additional styles that are not present in the Tyros preset styles. Similarly, the Tyros has more than 60 styles that are not present in the PSR-3000. You will note that the style categories used in the 3000 match the categories used in the Tyros. And, in each category, there are a lot of styles that at least have the same name and, most likely, are identical. But there are also styles that are new and unique to the 3000 as well as styles in the Tyros that are not in the 3000. In the detailed style table provided below, I list styles in the Tyros and the 3000 by category, but divided the styles into those that are common to both keyboards and those that are unique to both keyboards.

Styles on Hard Drive

Note: styles in the 3000 and the Tyros are interchangeable. Current Tyros models are being shipped with an additional 107 styles on the hard drive. These additonal styles, that do indeed include many the new 3000 styles, are shown in Table 3 below. Because both the 1500 and 3000 can use external USB hard drives, it is possible to add hundreds of additional styles to either of those models so having a large number of preset styles is not as critical.
