The
PSR-2100 can make beautiful music many different ways.
An accomplished musician can sit at the keyboard and play
it and thus show off what the instrument can do. But
even if you are not quite so accomplished, you can still show
off what the instrument will do by simply pressing the DEMO
button. You'll find it just to the left of the MAIN screen.
Now, your PSR will show off itself!
Selecting Files on the PSR-2100
The MAIN screen will now show the DEMO screen (see below).
Since this screen is typical of many you see on the PSR-2100
from which you select files (voices, styles, registrations,
songs, multi pads) let's pay some attention to it because
it illustrates clearly the overall navigational scheme used
by Yamaha to allow users to make choices. (Note: the DEMO
screen on the PSR-2000 shows the same functions, although
the icons next to each function are different.)
Screen Title and Tabs
The title of the screen is shown at
the very top, in this case "DEMO". There are three "tabs"
available in this DEMO screen and they are
indicated by the simulated "tabs" of a folder shown in the
upper right-hand side of the screen. The tabs are labeled
"FUNCTION", "VOICE", and "STYLE" and, in this case, refer
to a "category" of demo. You are currently viewing the "FUNCTION"
demos. You can tell that because the FUNCTION tab is
highlighted and the other two tabs are shaded.
Note: for file-related screens, for
example, styles or voices, the "tabs" refer to memory location
(PRESET, USER, or FLOPPY DISK). On yet other screens,
such as in the Style Creator, the "tabs" refer to different
functions and parameter settings in creating a style.
However,
no matter what the tabs refer to, you move backward or forward
among the various tabs by pressing the [BACK]
and [NEXT] buttons. These are located just above
and to the right of the MAIN screen.
Screen Pages
Any particular "tab" may
have one or more "Pages" of information. For selecting
demo songs, as shown above, each page presents the user with
up to 10 choices. The current page is shown at the bottom
-- notice "P1" in the screen display above. There is
also a second page available under the FUNCTION tab.
It is shown as "P2" but it is shaded showing that it is not
currently selected.
Selecting a Demo
To select any of the 10 choices on
the screen, you would press the corresponding button on the
left or right side of the main screen. The left side
buttons are labeled "A" through "E" and the right side buttons
are labeled "F" through "J". You will see this same
type of interface when selecting voices, styles, registrations,
or multi pads.
Note: Sometimes, one or more
of the 10 choices on a page is a "folder" and is indicated
by a folder icon. If you select a folder, the folder
will open up and you will see up to 10 additional choices.
If the folder contains more than 10 files, you would also
see multiple pages on the bottom screen of the screen, one
page for every 10 files. A folder can have another folder
within it. This is exactly the same as the files and
folders you would normally find on a floppy disk. We will
discuss the file storage options in more detail later.
Selecting Other Options
Depending on the screen
you are looking at, there may also be choices reflected in
the bottom two rows of the screen. Picture a
"row" as a horizontal line of information.
We will also refer to "columns " and picture those
as vertical lines of information, like a column holding
up a building. Using one of the 10 lettered
buttons ([A] - [J]) chooses a "row". A "column"
is chosen by using one of the 8 numbered buttons
you see at the bottom of the MAIN
screen. For example, in this screen, "P1" is in column
1 and "P2" is in column 2. Although you don't see a lot of
other options in this screen, the "AUTO" selection on the
bottom right would be in column "8" -- it is located right
above the "8" button. When there are two rows of options
at the bottom, the choices in row 7 (P1 and P2) would be selected
by pressing the button Above the corresponding number.
Choices in the very bottom row, row 8, are selected by pressing
the button Below the corresponding numbered button.
To select "AUTO", you would press the button below the number
8.
In lesson throughout this site, we refer to the
buttons below the numbers by appending a "B" (for
Below) and the buttons above the numbers by appending an "A"
(for "Above). So, in the example shown here, the AUTO
option would be accessed by pressing button [8B] and the two
page buttons would be referred to as [1A] and [2A].
Navigational Summary
This simple example of the DEMO screen applies
to all file screens in your PSR. All screens will have
a TITLE at the top, one or more TABS (which are accessed with
the [BACK] and ]NEXT] buttons). The 10 files shown are accessed
by pressing the corresponding lettered button ({A] - [J]).
Instead of showing a "file", a folder (which holds
additional files) may be shown. Selecting that folder "Opens"
the folder and shows the files in that folder. If there are
more than 10 files, they will be shown on additional "Pages".
Pages are shown in row 7 and there can be as many "pages"
as need to show all the files. For example, if you had 35
files in a folder, it would require 4 pages to display all
the files.
Additional options on a file screen are shown
in the bottom two rows. These are selected by using the 8
numbered buttons below the main screen. The buttons "Above"
the numbers refer to options in row 7, and the buttons "Below"
the numbers refer to options in row 8, the bottom row. These
options are used to move from page to page. If you "open"
a folder to see the files in that folder, there will be an
option at the bottom of the screen to move back up to the
"parent" folder.
Well, now that you understand how to select things
from the DEMO screen, let's take a look at the demos that
are available.
